<p>Back in the day, no one would ever have heard the name of that company and &#8220;women&#8217;s leadership&#8221; spoken in the same breath. Was it a great event? Sure. But the CEO wasn&#8217;t there, nor were any of the C-level executives who control the future of women&#8217;s leadership there.</p>
<p>Is Corporate America doing enough to advance the cause of women&#8217;s leadership? NO. Some companies are doing great things. I see it all the time when I speak at leadership events. But, there are many instances when the male leadership at the company supports these efforts in order to check off some duty on their to-do list. It&#8217;s high-profile lip service.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: courier new; font-weight: bold; color: #ff0000;">I&#8217;ve been at some events where the CEO speaks, then stays for the entire day (or two) of sessions. And I&#8217;ve been at other events where the CEO comes in and talks for 20 minutes, then apologizes because he got to rush out to a meeting. I know they are busy. But, if they are supporting women&#8217;s leadership in an effort to boost retention and truly advance women in the organization, they&#8217;ve got to be there. Some have made an extraordinary commitment to women&#8217;s leadership &#8211; like the people I&#8217;ve met at KPMG, Accenture, Coca-Cola, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Microsoft, Kraft, Ford Motor Co., among others.</span></p>
<p>But, Catalyst reports that we still don&#8217;t have access to the power positions. Women hold fewer than 15 percent of the seats on Fortune 500 corporate boards and only 15 women are CEOs at Fortune 500 companies. Let me twist that around. Men hold 97 percent of the top CEO jobs and 85 percent of the top board positions. That&#8217;s where we want women in leadership, but it ain&#8217;t happening.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve heard from many women lamenting that the top brass seems more inclined to turn to the tried-and-true (men) during the downturn, rather than reach out for new ideas from women in the ranks. How can we advance ourselves in a crazy climate like this? By pushing harder than we ever have. By networking and making friendships with the people who matter. We&#8217;ve come this far because we&#8217;ve only begun to learn to network and propel one another. Now it is time to leverage our friendships and brainstorm ideas and strategies that can propel our companies.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t share small talk. Share ideas. Contribute. Inspire others to contribute. Lead. Work like hell and make sure those who can advance your career know what you are doing. Help other women. <p>So, what does this have to do with leadership?</p>
<p>Last month I asked an audience of leaders to tell me the characteristics of an ideal leader. Their answers were (in the order collected):</p>
<p>A good listener, enthusiasm, passion, shows appreciation, a visionary, role model, trusting, integrity, organized, knowledgeable, credibility, persuasive, charisma, team building, clarity of purpose, problem solver, attitude of service, leads by example, patience, willing to act without complete knowledge, understands followers, consistent, empowers other people, and adapts to change.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll add that this is essentially the same list that I receive from other audiences when I ask this question. From this comes some useful insights.</p>
<p>1) Notice what the list contains. All of these characteristics relate to the human side of leadership. That&#8217;s interesting because I often hear people minimize this side of leadership with terms like &#8220;soft&#8221; or &#8220;touchy feely.&#8221; Actually, applying these characteristics requires more strength than not.</p>
<p>2) Notice what the list excludes. Absent from this list (and all lists from other programs) are characteristics such as stern, mean, serious, short tempered, vindictive, tough, angry, harsh, punitive, controlling, violent, or ruthless. And that&#8217;s interesting because many popular representations of leadership emphasize at least one of these &#8220;hard&#8221; characteristics. In fact, these characteristics are the refuge of those who lack the strength (or the skills) to apply the human side of leadership.</p>
<p>3) How about you? How would you rate yourself as a leader compared to the list of positive characteristics? If you were to survey the people who report to you, how would they describe your leadership? Would they list characteristics from the &#8220;soft&#8221; list or from the &#8220;hard&#8221; list? Could you become more effective by improving upon any of the &#8220;soft&#8221; characteristics? And how about the other leaders in your organization? Do they truly maximize human potential?</p>
<p>People want leaders who treat them with genuine compassion, courtesy, and respect. They want leaders who help them become more successful. They want leaders who inspire them with a vision for a better world and show them how to go there.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Your attitude determines your altitude – in business and in life. You can’t change someone else’s attitude for them. But this powerful adage is a great reminder that you can put in front of anyone who needs an attitude adjustment. I want to talk about a few of the many ways each of us can develop a winning attitude every day. It’s what leaders do.</p>
<p>Marcus Aurelius, the great philosopher who ruled the Roman Empire, said it simply: “Our life is what our thoughts make it”.</p>

If we think miserable thoughts, we will be miserable. If we think fear thoughts, we will be fearful. If we think sickly thoughts we probably will be ill. If we think failure, we will certainly fail. If we wallow in self-pity, everyone will want to shun us and avoid us”.</p>
<p>Am I advocating a Pollyanna attitude toward all our problems? No. Life isn’t that simple. But I am advocating – in the strongest terms – that we assume a positive attitude instead of a negative one.</p>
<p>Mental attitude &#8211; the power we hold in our heads. Reality can be changed dramatically by a single thought. In nutrition the adage is you are what you eat. In terms of leadership, it’s more likely you are what you think. Contrary to what people want to believe, outside influences don’t usually determine your happiness or success, rather it is how we react to those influences – good or bad. So how do you change your reactions to those outside forces?</p>
<p>Make how you react a conscious priority, which means practice daily.</p>
<p>Humor is vital. When things aren’t going your way, keep everything in perspective and relax. I laugh. Others throw up their hands. Whole industries get very cynical.</p>
<p>Positive self-confident feelings not only help you achieve more; they also make others want to be associated with you. People are drawn to others who have an upbeat outlook, who have a can-do attitude. Constant complainers don’t collect an easy following.</p>

<p>One of a leader’s most important jobs is to set a positive and self-confident tone, exuding the attitude that failure is not an option. A positive attitude is the cornerstone of leadership. It’s the same confidence that a quarterback, a golfer, or a tennis star projects every time they come out of the locker room.</p>
<p>To gain strength from the positive and not be sapped by the negative, here are a few ideas:</p>
<p>Focus on the 90% of your team who will run with your vision and your plan &#8211; don&#8217;t let the &#8220;negative nellies&#8221; drain you or poison your team.</p>
<p>Tap your spiritual essence at work too &#8211; use your spirit and your heart to move you and your work forward.</p>
<p>Break the negative energy cycle – if you see yourself spiraling down or in a rut, mix it up, breakup the routine and do something fast that lifts you up. When you see one of your team members in a rut of unproductive or unprofessional behavior address it, don’t let it fester.</p>
<p>Active listening – takes time. Work at it, to hear what your team wants. Often just by being heard, problems can go away and people really make a big turnaround.</p>
<p>You must be the emotional manager of your office &#8211; not your assistant, not the new hotshot you just hired. In a family, parents must be the emotional managers or chaos rules the home. In your business, you must wear that mantel, albeit reluctantly at times. It’s part of your leadership role and power. Hone it, as well as your reactions to external events, and you’ll see the culture around you shift to the positive.</p>
<p>Jim Collins points out in Good to Great: When in doubt, don’t hire – keep looking. You can’t grow revenues consistently faster than your ability to get enough of the right people to implement that growth and still become a great company. So unless candidates for the open position have that can-do attitude and are a strong fit for your company in who they are – don’t hire them. The skills can be taught; the and-then-some positive attitude cannot.</p>
<p>Doug Emerson put it recently: “The prerequisite is attitude. Attitude is the one thing we can’t change in employees. You’ve got a good attitude or you don’t. Given adequate ability and desire to learn, everything else can be taught to employees with good attitudes. I have tried many times to teach good attitudes and have come to the conclusion it is about as easy as making a mud fence.”</p>
<p>A negative attitude will pull you down and with it your professional results. A positive attitude will pull you over the rough spots and energize you to lift your results to new heights – to match your vision. Whether you need an attitude adjustment a couple of times a day, once a week or only occasionally, never forget that your attitude determines your altitude. Don’t let outside people or events bring yours down.</p>

Do not give anyone an occasion to think that you are a hypocrite.</p>
<p>2)    Be sure that every decision you make is honest and ethical.  You cannot effectively lead, as a Christian or not, when your decisions and actions are not above-board, fair, and honest.</p>
<p>3)    As a Christian leader, commit to telling the truth no matter what.  As a Christian leader, when you lie or tell half-truths, people tend to feel that your entire faith is a sham.  In fact, if you are habitually lying and telling half-truths, your faith may indeed be a sham.</p>
<p>4)    Learn everything you can about the tasks at hand, even if it means working in the trenches for awhile.  No one likes to be led by someone who has never done what they are doing.  This doesn’t mean you have to become an expert, just participate in the menial work long enough to understand the frustrating aspects of the work.  Another benefit to this is, when you have actually done the work, you can more effectively brainstorm solutions to challenges when they arise.</p>
<p>5)    Lead by example.  Do you expect your employees or secretaries to arrive on time for work, and dressed well?  Then you must do the same.  Sometimes it is so easy to think that you have earned the right to come in whenever you feel like it, or to return from lunch whenever you wish.  Sure, you may have earned the right, but you gain far more by setting the example for performance.  Do you expect others to work overtime when a project is behind projections?  Then you must be willing to do the same.</p>
<p>6)    Although you may feel you have earned the right to delegate away all the work, continue to be involved in productive tasks.  By doing some of the work, not only do you gain the respect of your employees, but also you keep in touch with the flow of things.  As a leader, it is easy to become disengaged from the actual productive segment of your business, and resultantly make decisions that look good on paper and sound good around the boardroom table, but are actually worthless when the rubber hits the road.</p>
<p>7)    Constantly reevaluate your own performance.  Often, you may spend so much time correcting the actions of others and solving crises you didn’t create, that you develop a sense that others aren’t as capable as you.  Consequently, you may not recognize when you are falling into bad habits that also need to be corrected.  Be the first to recognize and correct your own short-fallings.</p>
<p>8)    Avoid pride.  Once in a position of leadership, especially if you are good at what you do, it is easy to begin to feel that you are invincible.  Once that occurs, you become vulnerable to pride, and may make decisions you would frown on if your subordinates made the same decisions.  Maintain full responsibility for your actions, and keep them above-board at all times.</p>
<p>Bonus Step:</p>
<p>9)    Learn to manage your time.  When you are in a position of leadership and find yourself delegating away most of the time-consuming tasks, it is easy to lose control of your time.  Again, when your employees see you wasting your time, they will tend to do the same.</p>
