I think that virtual employment will expand greatly over the next few years. It means that people in other countries can earn well compared with local wages and this will increase the number of people learning english to get virtual jobs. All of this will make virtual employment even more popular.

There are lots of short-sighted people complaining about outsourcing and especially outsourcing to virtual employees offshore. But the reality is that having virtual employees in countries where the cost of labor is less expensive allows some businesses to survive where they would not be able to sustain the costs of domestic employees or even domestic outsourcing. There are many small businesses that would completely cease to exist if they couldn't outsource to virtual employees offshore. It's not about greed and massive profits, it is about productivity and survival.

One of the enabling things to building virtual employees today are the free or near free Saas tools that manage the backend processes. Everything used to require scale - to get a 1 800 number, to run a direct mail campaign, to get quality CRM etc. Now you can get all of this stuff combined for less than $100 per month and run like a much larger organization. It's all about appearing seamless to the end customer.

It is possible to outsource many functions - including IT, telemarketing, sales, accounts, etc.

The decision to outsource will often depend on the current skills you already have available, and the cost of getting them. In many cases, outsourcing will be faster and more convenient, and not require any capital outlay.

In our case, we complete outsourced telemarketing and telephone market research projects in the UK. Many of our client companies want us for one-off projects, where the cost of recruiting and setting up would be too high to run in-house. Some use us for ongoing project, where they do not have the space or expertise to run and in-house telemarketing or research team.

Costs for outsourcing (certainly in your own country) are generally higher, but with a good partner they may save you money, as they will be more efficient, due to the higher level of skills and experience. Compare the time it takes a good book-keeper to do the accounts as opposed to doing them yourself!
